Engine identification and tranny options...help please
Hi guys, I recently bought a 59 3/4 ton w a rebuilt 460 swapped in, it also came w no transmission, it used to have a C6. I really want a manual w overdrive so it looks like a zf5 is my main option. My question are, do certain models of the zf5 only fit certain years of the 460 block, how do I identify what year the motor is (currently carbureted), are there other options for a manual w OD? I really don't need a granny gear. Any help really appreciated.
There's no other factory option for a five speed OD.
You need one that came behind a 460 engine, and I would assume a 2wd version as you don't mention transfer case mounting.
Windsor version will not fit, and it takes drilling new bolt flange holes and dowels to fit a diesel pattern, though it can be done.
Any year from a 7.5 will fit your block. The bellhousing pattern did not change.
Look behind the harmonic balancer for a 'hatchet' counterweight.
This, and a D9TE engineering number cast into the block, signify external balance.
All flywheels drilled for the 12" ZF clutch will be external balance.
Custom flywheels are expensive!!!
ZF's had an external slave cylinder.
Will you be able to retrofit a hydraulic clutch master to your '59?
I'm sure others will be able to flesh out the details, but these are the basics.

Thanks for the info, that really limits my search options, I was about to drive 100m to look at a ZF5 behind a 351. I am looking for a 2wd version cuz it has a divorced tcase. the original swapper put the body on an early highboy chassis. Does the hatchet counterweight refer to it's shape? The 59 used to have a master and slave cyl, just need to locate a pedal. I have been watching CL for whole donor trucks, a couple of older trucks have been advertised as having a 460 w manual 4 spd w OD, maaybe some bad info there. Thanks again.
Yes that refers to the counterweight.
.
I did not realize you had a divorced TC.
Much simpler to find a 2wd ZF.
Maybe the ads you see are for T-18 or NP with a gearvendors OD?
If you have an earlier internal balance 460 then you can have the external balance flywheel re-balanced to a neutral balance. I did this on mine and it cost me $96.
There are companies that sell adapters to put in NV4500 and some other transmissions, that's also an option.
The cast in bellhousing on the ZF-5 is large and even in my 78 required clearancing in multiple spots so I would keep that in mind, not sure how your truck is currently setup or how much room you have.
