1980 SWB

Been awhile since I was on here. I had a couple effies but sold them a few years back. Well I saw this early 80s truck sitting down the road from me so I stopped to ask. They didn't want to sell so I let it go. You just don't see that many shortbeds around here and Fords rarer yet. Week ago he contacted a friend of mine and said they decided to sell. I went over to check out and they had thrown some parts at it trying to keep it running. New AC compressor, new alt, new starter, new radiator and smog pump(I don't know why). It has a 302 and there is or has been water in the oil and a rod knocking. Lucky thing is a friend mine has a brother that cleans rental homes and they are all Chevy guys, well he came across a 302 and gave it to me. So I have a motor for it. Cool thing is I heard about these but never run across one, it has the small 5 on 4.5" lug pattern with a 9" rear. To me that was pretty cool. I'll post a pic when I get home.

5 on 4 1/2 you say? Well, I never heard or saw anything like this, so I was skeptical, but looks like the 80 to 83 F100 is just as you describe and confirmed by our resident expert!

Here are a couple pics of the truck. It has 51,000 original miles. Well I have to go figure out how to post pics again. Found it. It will only bring up one pic.

If I keep it I'm looking at the Fatman Fab kit to set it on the ground, don't see this body style lowered around here or anywhere for that matter. just thinking......

1980/83 F100: Some have 5 lug wheels on a 4.50" bolt circle, some have 5 lug wheels on a 5.50" bolt circle.

1980/83 F100's with 5 lug wheels on a 4.50" bolt circle have 10" x 2 1/2" rear brakes. All other 1968/83 F100's have 11" x 2 1/4" rear brakes.

1980/82 F100/150 have a 9" rear axle / 1983 F100/150 could have an 8.8" or 9" / 1984/86 F150 could have an 8.8" or a 9."

Now I have to go check my 82 F150, cause I could have swore mine was a 8.8", then again I swore mine had a C4 when its really a C6.

8.8" introduced in 1983, see last two applications in pic.

The difference between an 8.8 and a 9" is easily distinguishable by a removable differential cover on the 8.8. The 9" is completely solid on the back.

Changing the whole suspension out to lower it is going to be your only choice on this truck.

They make lowering beams that you can install under it, but guess what? They do not make them for the f100's with the 5 on 4.5 pattern. But you can get some later beams from a f150 and use the parts off them to use the dropped beams. But of course then your bolt pattern won't match the rearend, so you can swap that out at the same time.

There are also some people who have tried swapping in a later crown vic frontend.

The 5 on 4.5 pattern is not so neat depending on what you want to do with the truck.
