Is a cab mounted fuel tank dangerous?

hmmm, this post is just the opposite of what my post a while back says.https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...hreadid=131325
my 79 F250 has a tank in the cab and at the rear of the bed,i do not think anyone in there right mind would do a conversion like this, it is all factory looking from the tubing to the vents for the cab tank to the switch in the dash by the heater control's, and hawkrod you say you have a 79 tow truck this way. i am going to presume this is all factory ford then. kinda makes me feel a little better knowing that my truck is still somewhat original.

Personally I feel like the tanks in cabs are safe unless there is a leak and you will have no doubt if there is one and you will fix it before a fire breaks out. But in an accident I think the in cab tanks have a bad mark. There is no doubt that in a situation of an accident and a fire breaks out somewhere I don't like the chances of the gasoline in the tank leaking inside of the cab with me. Maybe Ford saw this too, which is why the gas tanks are no longer inside of truck cabs.

How many of you remember a truck with a battery mounted under the passenger side floorboard ? If you remember them then you probably know why they are no longer placed there.

My '76 F100 4spd 4x4 has an in cab tank, and one above spare tire, with electric switching. In cab is main, axle is aux. Both are about 20 gallons. Look in FourWheeler of 4wheel and offroad magazines. There are always tank makers in there. I'm going to get a 40gallon replacement for the rame mounted tank, then remove the in cab for some actuall storage space. Total cost is about $300-$400 with new straps and sender.

Is a cab mounted fuel tank dangerous?

Thanks for all the great info everyone! I really appreciate the feedback.

If I could get a tank for over the spare, I'd ditch the in-cab tank. I really like having two tanks. Without relocating the crossmember, a tank in that location would be only about 12 gallons. Can the rear most crossmember be relocated safely?

A company named AeroTanks makes a 32 gallon tank that fits between the rails of the narrow high-boy.

My 77 has the in cab tank, soon to be removed. Not only does it take up too much valuable junk storage space behind my seat. I really don't want to find out what will happen if I rolled the truck. Plan is to install a 40 gallon aft axle mounted tank.

Is a cab mounted fuel tank dangerous?

A few years ago there was a program on TV about in cab tanks and how badly some people were burned in the course of an accident Glad my '77's tanks are between the frame and over the spare. I wouldn't have it any other way!! My .02.

Well you don't have to be afraid if you never get into an accident!

Seriously though, the in cab tanks are more dangerous than the aft axle tanks.

I realize that but the aft axle tank will also give me more fuel capacity, gonna need it with that 351!
