I have a 91 with rear air and the sticker on the blower unit says 3.0 lbs R-12 without rear air and 4.0 lbs of R-12 with rear air. I also just had my van converted to R-134A. I looked at the invoice for the conversion and it also took 4.0 lbs of R-134A, the same amount as R-12.
I agree with merczephyr, I just retrofitted my '93 3.0, no auxilliary unit.....
All that I have read state 80-90 % R134-A relative to R12. ( I shot in 44 ounces..)
I just did this retro and have had no problems yet.... I also replaced the Accumulator and the Orifice. I called the 2 local Ford dealers and both stated they changed only "some "O-rings" when they did a retrofit. I figure better safe than sorry, so thats why I changed what I did...
When I originally bought this vehicle ten years ago I took it back to the dealer because the A/C wasn't cold enough. The response back was that it was within spec, (48 degrees)...
When I did the retrofit with less efficient R-134A, my reading at the vent was 38 degrees (outside temp was 93 degrees/ 92 % humidity)
Needless to say , I am very satisfied with this procedure.... Go for it you wont be sorry
Let me rephrase my above statement, then. Let me say I was "charged" for 4 lbs of R-134A. I guess I don't know for sure how much was put in by the dealer.
