Have a question. Just replaced the rotars and brakes on my 97 Ford Explorer. It a 4x4 with 4-wheel disk brakes. Taking off the rear rotors was a pain. Did everything that I was supposed to, however, now my rear emergency brake seems to be locking. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be the issue?
Inside those rear disc brakes are miniature drum brakes- these are your emergency brakes. May have dislodged the cable or something else. Be forewarned: these things are miserable to work on, and are NOT cheap to replace. I believe you can only get these through a Ford dealer parts department. Anyone else know of any sources for them?
I bought my emergency brake shoes for my '97 Explorer from Autozone's web-site for $15. Since I wasn't in a hurry and didn't want to wait in line, I had them shipped to my house for another $4.00.
and they no longer carried them at least at stores. I know that parts like the belt tensioner can be ordered on the web site and not through stores. Got relined ones at NAPA for about $20. I had problems trying to use the old hardware. A weak spring clip that holds the shoe against the backplate caused some inital abnormal wear. Initial problem was bits of shoe delaminated and locked up the drum. A week after replacing the brakes the shaft seal started leaking, evidently the result of heat damage. With all the work I've done on cars, I still think this E brake is posessed.
