I know it probably gets annoying to answer the same questions umpteen million times, but I have a question about my oil pressure in my '72. I have the stock gauge, so I can't give you numbers, and I don't know for sure if the gauge and sender work exactly as they should. The engine is a 351W and I don't know the history. I'm running Castrol 10W-30 with an el-Cheapo oil filter (for now). The gauge appears to be functioning correctly. When I start the truck, the gauge goes to the middle. If I run the truck down the Interstate at 70-75 mph, the gauge drops to just above the lower end of the "Normal" range. When I get back on a two-lane at a slower pace, it rises back up. It seems I read on here somewhere that the cheapo filters could cause this. My plan is to use the correct FL-1A at the next oil change. What else can I do to maintain the oil pressure for now? A rebuild may be in this engine's future, but it won't be anytime soon.
Logic tells me that oil pressure will increase with rpm. I know of no mechanism internally that will cause your symptoms. However, the senders are mechanical and notorious. It may be that increased oil pressure pushes the wiper resistor arm inside to a bad spot. I suggest changing the sender and filter. Use good Ford stuff.
The guys will be in soon. Meanwhile, try posting it up on the Oil and Lubrication forum.
Well, I thought it was a good idea to post this question in the oil forum, but I may have been mistaken. I've been a member here for a long time, and I mainly used the 7.3L diesel forum and the Super Duty forum until just recently. I have found it is better to choose a forum based on the people who frequent it, and their willingness to help people, rather than strictly by the subject matter or category. Just let me stop right now, before I receive any further benefit of the accumulated knowledge here, and before I think of another question that most of the rest of you already know the answer to, and tell you people how much I appreciate your help! For the most part, I'd say over 99% of the time, folks here have graciously offered me sound advice and helped me figure out problems that I may have never solved on my own. Again, I say thank you!!
Now that my rant is over, we shall now return to your regular programming....
Your engine may be running a little cooler while your running slower if you have a fan clutch. As oil does thin at higher temps. As 10w-30w is for like cooler parts of the country-10*to 90* and above +32*to 90*+ use 20w-40w now this is per my 1971 glove box manual.
You may want to try 20w-40w or even 20w-50w Or some theirs some of the 15w-40w diesel oils like Shell rotella is a good one. Some other brands but don't have the list at hand right now..
