Real world MPG on your v10
#136
New data: Just did a round trip through California up to Portland OR and back. 1999 E350 with a remanufactured V10. Loaded with wife and two kids and luggage (so lightly loaded but not empty). Fuel economy kept getting better as the trip progressed. Got high 13s to low 14s, except for the last tank which tipped in around 15mpg. Varied driving. The tank prior to the last involved significant mountain driving at low speeds (from under 1000 ft to over 7000 and back down) and still got around 14.

Im like this guy. Except srw not dually. I hand calculated it a few times. Towing, empty, mixed driving and long highway trips. Now i just tell the wife it gets what the lie o meter says. She still is annoyed but would probably flip if i told her what it actually got

BELOW is a post I saw on Face Bags:
"Just took my first camping trip with my 6,600 lb trailer and got 9 mph. I have a 2004 - 6.0 diesel. Is that average or low?"
BOY, don't it make you wish U had a 6.0! LMOA
THIS is the same #s I had with my 7.3 in 2000. NEVER again will I get dupped on an oil burner.
For the cost diff (up front & maintenance) I'll live with 6-8 MPG towing 10-12K ALL DAY LONG...

You know it's funny, my friend who always has a new cummins every couple years said to me one day "what do you get for MPG's towing?" I said anywhere between 7-8.
He said that his dodge was getting no better than 12 with similar trailers, often times lower. He's a diesel nut so he likes diesels which I respect too. He just mentioned that these newer generations weren't getting the same mpg as his 2002 did.
But I think that the emissions will get better and better resulting in better economy for the diesels.
If I had the cash I'd buy a brand new F450 diesel and let go of the V10 without a thought. But I just don't have that kind of money nor the ability to afford a loan like that. So for now it stays in the stable ready and willing to work.

21 and 14??? My Expedition doesn't get that and it's almost new. I don't even think my V10 ever got 14 miles to the gallon on the highway. 2009 crew cab long bed XL 4x4

diesels. if a thread hijack im sorry
I do not tow, but im a truck driver and come holiday weekends everyone is leaving town with their trailers, I see suv's on the side of the road with the hood up and honestly if i see a 4stroke its rare. Always a diesel ruining everyones weekend with engine failure. A good friend had a f150 and felt like less than a man when towing uphill because the diesels would leave him in the dust. He wanted my x but i said no. He purchased a 03 6.0 and i told him not to because of reliability issues ive heard of. Broke down 3x and towed 2 of those times from the middle of nowhere. He Just got rid of it.Diesels are better at towing but i'd rather arrive late then not at all.
