so I notice a little play in my ujoint the last time im under there greasing away, so i go get a new ujoint today and procede to put it in and as i pulled the snap rings out one of the bearing cups falls right out.....
so i install the new ujoint and yup the new bearing cup slides freely in and out of the drivshaft ring thing......
i cant notice any play in the ujoint but i assume this is gonns cause me problems, is there any way short of a new drivshaft i can shim or shrink that bearing cup holder (for lack of a better term) on the drivshaft?????
dont laugh but in the past iv used pieces of pop can to shim very tight spots.. do you think that would work here???? or am i just looking for trouble there????
You're looking for trouble. What you can do, is take the drive shaft to a good auto parts store.( napa) They sell u joints with different size caps. So the cap that goes in your yoke in your rear end will be the same but the cap that goes in your yoke in your drive shaft will be a little bigger.
You will be a lot happier knowing it is in ther right.
If there is not much clearance where it fits, you can take a center punch and make a few dimples evenly spaced around the id where the cap fits into. This will work only if the fit is off just a little. If it is really sloppy, you need to get it fixed. If it can bang around in there for awhile, it might eventually come through the side of the bearing cup journal, and really ruin your day.
Get the right part b4 you mess with other high $$ parts. If there is a lot of slop you probably have the wrong U-joint. Some of those caps come in 1/32" increments. The caps should fit tightly in their bores. If the caps have been loose enuf the yoke may be ruined because they have been beaten out of shape.
