Hey guys... Got a question... I few months back I had to park my truck for a few months. Starter went out, needed tires etc... Couldn't afford it all at once..... So I didn't drive it for a while... I replaced the starter finally.... Went to start it and it was weak sounding, not enough juice to turn it over.... Both batteries are a year old this month....So I charged the batteries, cleaned up terminals etc.... They both read 12.4v after charged.... Still not enough juice to start it...charged several times to make sure.... I haven't done a load test... Is it possible that both batteries are bad from it sitting even though they aren't that old?.... They are the big walmart maxx batteries( I know not the best choice)... They are under warranty but I know Walmart has become strict on the replacement policy.... Afraid they will say they are fine.
I bought 5 walmart batteries within one year. One didn't make it the three years, they wouldn't warranty it. The other 4 made it about 3 years and 1 month. Never again. Motorcrafts for me now.
I guess I'd take them into the lovely place and have them check them. Actually if it were me, I don't know if I could again. I got so pi$$ed the last time.
Check your starter draw. Also make sure everything is clean and tight as far as grounds etc.
Walmart battery's have been made by Johnson Control for years.
Unless they changed suppliers. Johnson always had a great reputation for quality.
Unless they changed ownership or something. I am surprised to hear of repeat failures.
Well they tested good... Both over 800 CCA.... Starter is brand new, just put on... Guess I am gonna have to go though the connections and wires... Was gonna replace all the terminals but you can't replace the big one without replacing the whole positive wire??? What should my starter draw be??? My luck I prob got a bad starter, pos advance auto part starter... Went through 2 on my other truck before I got a good one.
I charged the batteries again cleaned everything up again.. sounds a little better... still doesnt sound like its enough but the new starter has a different sound than the old one... I am thinking I might have another issue.... in the past like on cold mornings or any time the truck was hard to start I had some smoke coming out of tail pipe... I got none... is that normal??
I forget what rpm it should turn over but it has to be so fast or the IDM will not fire the injectors. If injectors are not firing then no smoke.
I dont know... getting frustrating..... was running fine... I let it sit and seems like I am running into more issues.....wondering if I got a bad starter from auto zone.... you know after owning a diesel for so long you know what it should sound like when it starts... goes from sounding strong to sounding weak pretty fast.I still think it could be a battery issue..... but even on cold mornings when it sounded weak it usually started or had some smoke coming out... I love my diesels but man my gas engines are so easier to diagnose and fix lol...hoping its not Hpop or injectors not sure where to start...nor do I have a ton of money to dump into it...
Does your battery charger have a Start position on it? If so leave the charger hooked up in the start position, to give the batteries a little more umph.
May want to check all the terminal connectors again. Mine did this same thing with new batteries in it a few months back. Come to find out after a new cps and a couple other things 1 of the terminal's was bad. So it was only spinning off 1 batt really. $4 later spins like a new one
Good luck
The only one that looks like it might need replacing is the big positive terminal with two wires going into it..., can you get a new terminal that supports that big of a wire?

Yup - Something like NAPA AUTO PARTS . Not sure what gauge the OEM cable is; just do a search on "battery flag terminal".
But see above - check the HPOP reservoir level. Not run that long, it could have drained down. Also, the basics -
* Does the WTS light come on?
* Does the tach move?
