Gentelman, I am trying to install a set of hella 500 aux driving lights on my 97 f250. The instructions with the kit are vague at best. The kit supplied a relay, and im told that this is the way to go. Is that true? It appears that the instructions are saying to connect a wire to the high beams of the factory headlights. Why? I have installed a set if KC's on my 94 Ranger and it went smooth and easy but this kit seems to be altogether different. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kevin
They are using the wire from the high beams to trigger the relay. Then the relay switches the seperate fused circuit for the new lights. If you read some of the recent posts, you will notice people with added load on their light circuits start having problems with the factory headlight switch. That is why they use a relay, so all the current goes through the relay and not the original switch.
They are using the high beam wire to trigger the relay because, it would not be very considerate of other drivers if you are using the high output lights all the time. When you flick to low beam for on-coming drivers, the high output lights would automatically shut off. I don't know if there is a law against it or not. But I do know where I live, there is a law that says you can't have fog lamps work independently either. They must only work on low beam. Also be careful and mount them under the main headlamps. Otherwise, if they are higher than the headlamps, they must have covers on them, and they are for off-road use only. Each area is different, and you need to check out what's legal in your area. Hate to see you get a ticket.
