Bad wiring or sending unit?

My sig truck almost left me stranded a while back because the gas gauge is not working. It always reads past full. This tells me it's an open circuit. How do I find out if it's a bad sending unit or bad ground? I'm about to order a new sending unit but don't want to waste my money.

I have dropped my tank on my truck 3 times to deal with my old sending unit. One time it was a ground in the cab that was disconnected. The next time I pulled the tank and pushed the tang on the circuit board closer so it would read better also at that time I made a jumper wire for my ground that omitted the factory plug to see if that was a problem And I also fixed a corroded spot in the wiring harness just before the plug where the harness split for the tail lights and fuel pump. The next time I dropped it to find out that the ground on the unit itself had broken off and I then re soldered back on there and it worked again or about a month then it quit again. The last time, last weekend, I pulled the bed and put a whole new pump and sending unit in and while I was putting the new plugs on I found a broken wire in my harness... The wire pulled out of the butt connector I used... I was furious but Owell...

So the motto of this story is to check the harness really well before dropping the tank...

I think I'd rather pull the bed for easy access with my big hands. Thanks for the tips. I'm assuming the ground wire is black? I'll pull the bed and inspect the wiring. If all looks good, I'll go to town and get a new sending unit assembly

I'm just as big as you are and I can get my hands up there.. All you do is undo the tank straps and then have another person or a jack slowly lower in and then get a good angle and undo the two lines then drop it the rest of the way and wala!

The ground wire is yellow with I believe a white stripe
