Does anybody know if there is a rebuild kit for the A/C compressor? Mine took a dump on me and out of curiosity I took it apart to see how it works. It seems like it would be pretty easy to rebuild, but I can't find anyone who offers a kit, only a replacement compressor.
I got 260K miles out of the original and intend to replace all the necessary parts to fix it, but it just seems odd that I can't find anyone who sells a rebuild kit.
Rebuilding parts is a thing of the past now. Shops and dealers no longer rebuild starters, alternators, or brake calipers since it's time consuming and is an invitation to liability and warranty claims. The price for a new compressor (with a warranty) has come down quite a bit over the past few years.

Maybe in the shop and dealer world.
I rebuild everything I can get parts for unless I want to upgrade.
A new steering pump is $45-150 depending on where you go and which crummy reman company you buy from (I'm looking at you, A-1), but when all I needed was for it to quit leaking, damn straight I bought the $4 seal kit instead.
Same with a lot of other parts...
I rebuild it: I learn details, understand the inner workings, and know it's done right.
I buy a rebuild: don't learn crap, watch the ugly "reman gray" paint flake off, hope it was done right.
Depends on "how it took a dump". If the pistons grenaded, then no, as far as I know. If just the shaft seal went bad, then yes.
It looks like the synthetic o-rings on the pistons shredded. There aren't any metal parts or shavings inside the housing. Everything else looks fine. I know they re-manufacture these parts, so they're getting kits somewhere. I was just curious as it looks like it would be pretty easy to do.
I have rebuilt starters and alternators in the past just to see if I could do it and if the rebuild would last with surprising success, so I was thinking about trying this!
