AOD(E) puking transmission fluid

I have a 1988 F150 5.0 with the AOD (E) transmission. I noticed that I have transmission fluid coming out of the dipstick tube and onto the exhaust manifold below, creating a lovely and aromatic blend of stench and smoke. Also, the transmission appears to be slightly sluggish finding gears. It does this on any trip longer than 5 miles. I do not tow excessively heavy loads with this truck and drive like an old man. Any thoughts of cause and origin? Would really love to find a fix for this asap and hopefully it wont involve the transmission shop

I'd suspect blocked cooler lines going to the radiator, or a failed/blocked cooler itself.

Minor correction: You have a mechanical AOD transmission. Ford never put an AODE in the F-series trucks.

They went from the AOD to the 4R70W which is an electronic version of the AOD but do not confuse that with an AODE. They are different enough to consider them two different animals.

the blocked cooler seems to be an easy enough fix to attempt. looking at it from the front, I think I see three separate coolers, radiator being the cooler in the back. Would I get lucky enough that it would be the outer one so all I would have to remove is the grill to get to it?

Three "coolers" in these trucks. Radiator, condenser, then a small cooler for the transmission out in front.

thats great news. a one hour fix as opposed to a four hour headache. In the event that this doesn't alleviate the problem, any other things to look for?
