Two days ago while leaving Church 2005 Expedition (EB) began to emit white smoke from exhaust and smelled of gas. Assumed it wasn't firing properly on all cylinders. The car belongs to another person who drove it home. Next day the car wouldn't start. I towed it to my garage to take a look at it. The starter makes winding noise but does not enage flywheel. I realize this problem is not related to previous problem. Battery is fine so I am thinking solenoid or starter. Then neighbor tells me that Ford has a Failure Mode which protects system and that it why it doesn't crank. I have not been able to find anything on internet and so I thought I would try you Ford experts. I am a serious mechanic but I usually only work on old cars, airplanes and helicopters. I don't have any experience with trouble shooting EI Coil Over Plug Ignition Systems but I understand the engineering and theory. Ok so any suggestions...or shall I give up and tow it to a dealer. The goal is to save the nice church lady hundreds of dollars in repair bills since I would do the wok pro bono. Any assistance greatly appreciated...Thanks
Update: I replaced starter and it starts and drives. White smoke but no apparent cooling issues. Idles somewhat rough. I am heading to autozone for a code reading next. Thanks for your replies.
Ok I put in the reader and the Codes are P2198 and P2195. Car runs rich, hard to start and idles poorly like it wants to stall at red lights. No Overheating.

A compression test is the way to go. Nothing will solve this problem if it's a blown head gasket, except to deal with the head gasket. Excess fuel such as from an injector sticking open will create black smoke, and oil burning will be blue or grey smoke.
