HELP! 212 code, but no TFI module?

So I had a check engine light and 2 codes. First was a 332 code, and I fixed that with a new EGR valve. The light was reset and does not come on but when I check the codes I still have a 212 code. So I figured someone had accidentally put a grey TFI module, when I needed black or vice versa. This is an E350 7.5L 1994, and when I pulled off the air cleaner box to get a look at the distributer, it has the flat part where the TFI mounts, but no TFI.

so 2 questions,

Were the 7.5L's made without TFI's?

I feel as though the code has been there all the time, I do not have any driveability issues, and the check engine light is no longer on, so does this really need to be fixed

You have the remote mounted TFI type of ICM.
Yes you should have the Black ICM (TIF).
It is mounted on the drivers fender.

Thanks for the help! I finally located it! HOWEVER all of the ones on rock auto for a 94 E350 7.5L are EXPENSIVE! like 80$ If I go under a 95 5.0L Mustang, they look the same and the black ICM's are about 20$. Will this work?
Below is what I found on my drivers side firewall, which is totally wrong.

I HIGHLY recommend a Ford/Motorcraft Ignition Control Module (ICM). Aftermarket versions are prone to early failure. Even the name brands are suspect. Stick to Motorcraft, you will not be sorry.

I'm not sure that I completely agree. I purchased this E350 (motorhome) last year with 56,000 miles on it. It now has 62,000. I have never changed out the ICM, and since there is an ICM module with NAPA on it that means the previous owner had the Motorcraft ICM fail! So even a Motorcraft ICM failed with less than 56,000 miles on it! With those figures it seems like a shot in the dark!

When I put on rockauto that I have a 7.5L engine the cheapest black ICM is 80$
But when I change the engine to a 5.8L it comes up with a 23$ black ICM.
I'm going to go with the 23$. I don't think engine size matters, since napa doesn't even ask what engine size I have before it gives me a list of ICM's. I think it just matters if it's a V8 or not.

Thoughts?

maybe I'll get 50,000 miles out of a cheap ole black ICM like the previous owner got out of the factory ICM!

I have not heard or read on here of a Black Motorcraft ICM failing but they do get changed out when someone is throwing parts at a problem.
Whoever changed it out did not know what was going on or he would have replaced it with a Black one.
The Black will give more MPG and more power then the Gray one. Also the Ignition system in your MH is not wired to take the Gray one.

Also I have heard and read that Ford has never let the internal design of the ICM modules out Black or Gray. Why would they? All of the after market ICM are just a guess as to how they are made inside so none of them will be a 100% match for the Motorcraft ICM.

X1 on the black "MOTORCRAFT" ICM. When I got this last truck it had the exact one you have now, "WHICH IS WRONG". Truck never ran right. Went to pick and pull and bought a "BLACK" one for $3.00. Ran perfect, "NO MORE CODE". But hey. the "NEW" "SHINEY" "GRAY" one looks good, so go for it.

I found that the ones from pick and pull also come with a heat sink and that makes them a lot easier to change out.
Not that I ever had to change out a Black one but I do like spares.

I never said I was going to go for a grey one. I realize the grey one's are trash and incorrect. Thus the 212 code that I get! However, I am thinking of buying a cheaper black ICM off rock auto.

Ford may not have released anything about their ICM's, but if there are people who can hack computers, there must be someone who can hack a simple ICM.

I did end up purchasing a black ICM off rock auto for 30ish bucks. I think I'll hit a pick and pull tomorrow and see if I can find a stock ICM! It would be fun to see if there was a difference of MPG's between the two. Gas Cubby on my phone seems to do an excellent you of tracking that!

I wish you well with an aftermarket ICM. Really I do!
