One of my good friends is a Ford diesel mechanic. He thinks that it'll work, though he has no idea if any serious modifications will be required. Then again, his idea of a "serious modification" is probably different than it is to the rest of us!
Those that I've seen use the front 1/2 of the SD with a 6.7 and cut the vehicle in half behind the drivers seat, then weld to the back half of a Excursion. There's an active build on another web site doing just that.

The web link in my original post shows a build. They cut the new truck behind the drivers seat and the same with the excursion....line up the frame and body and weld it up!! more complicated than that...but that's the idea
