E150 fuel problems

Hi, it's me again-------------1988 E150 RV van with 302 and 3 sp OD transmission.
I had a hard to find fuel issue and the gas gauges on both tanks didn't work properly.
My mechanic replaced both tank pumps and gauges (one unit each) also the switchover on the frame plus the high pressure pump on the frame. I thought everything was OK but on a recent trip I learned that the rear tank wouldn't work. I switched over to the rear tank and it ran for half minute or so and sputtered. I switched back to the front tank and it caught back up and ran fine.
I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting. I did have the wife listen at each filler and she heard the 2 second click/run of the pumps when I switched back and forth.
Any Ideas before I return to the mechanic?
Thanks, Marvin

Hi Marvin,
I have the '88 Club Wagon and I feel your pain. I went through this with mine:

The OEM fuel distribution reservoir is a problem child and expensive to replace. My dad owned the van before me and when I got it, the rear tank was the only one working. He said he always had problems keeping both tanks working.

Thanks a Million. I printed out the message and pictures to give to my Mechanic.

I took it back to my mechanic and his troubleshooting procedure led him to think that the rear in tank pump was bad. He explained what all he did but it was kinda over my head. He ordered a new pump.

Sounds like the selector switch may also be bad if the new fuel pump does not work either.
The mod and the redrawing of MY diagram in the link above I would not recommend. That will cause engine surging and lack of power on hills and under heavy load.

I deleted the FoMoCo drawings with YOUR mods from the album, subford.
I changed the mods you added for two reasons: the pinouts on the BWD valve I was using were different, and your mods contained errors.

I may redraw them from scratch later, too many other important tasks left on the van for now.

BTW, I don't know about surging and lack of power? Since I changed out the FDR for the selector valve, the van has never run better.

Hi Marvin,

I added a couple new diagrams to the album, they are easier to follow than the schematics and the wire colors should be the same as mine, same year.

The best part about the install is not having to pull new wires anywhere. Just one new ground wire under the dash and some wire splices and fuel line connections and you are in business.
