My husband needs another Ford truck. He uses it to pull a trailer with a bobcat for construction and I have been looking for a used Ford for a few months trying to learn about how much I should pay. Today I test drove a 2000 with 74k miles. When the truck shifts into a higher gear or when I let off the gas, there was a sound like air pressure being released. I have driven a few Ford diesels that we owned and my husband has driven them for the last 6 years and neither one of us was familiar with this sound. The man at the dealership said this was typical of these Power Stroke Diesels. Is that true? Also, when I backed up at about 15 miles per hour, it felt almost like the brake was on but it was not. Has anyone experienced these things? Thanks so much for your help in advance.
Does it have a stock intake? I have the Tymar intake and the sound is typical when shifting gears. Per Dale at Tymar, the noise is always present (he gave a very technical explanation that I could not hope to accurately explain), but with the stock intake, you usually cannot hear it because of the intake box.
My 2000 PSD has a "slower" reverse than my old F150. I assume it is just the different gears.
I don't know what kind of intake it has. That is very interesting, though. If I hear that sound in another truck, I will ask the salesman what kind of intake it has. Those sales people don't even seem to know as much as I know which is virtually nothing about diesel trucks. They don't even wait for the glow plugs to warm up most of the time. Not all sales people, just most of the ones I have encountered. At least they should be able to look up what kind of intake it has. I think that particular truck has actually been sold. If you had been able to explain the techincal reason I would surely not have been able to understand it anyways! Thank you very much for your input.
