I have changed the filter and Vacume Modulator on the c-4 in my 1975 Bronco. After I put the pan back on and filled with type F I am unable to change gears!! It is like the transfer case is in "N" but it is not. When I dropped the filter a small spring came out. I put it back in (like I thought it should go.) That and the filter (plus new modulator) are the only things I changed. this is my first Automatic (and last maybe) and I can't seem to locate any good manuals. HELP!! Thanks
I have been told that there is a valve on top the the small spring that fell out. I don't recall seeing anything else in the pan other than the spring......
YES! There is a valve associated with that spring! It's called the Throttle Pressure Limit Valve, and without it you'll get shifts that are too soon, sloppy and perhaps no shifts at all (since your pressure goes way down without it).
It's about an inch long (maybe less) and looks a bit like a small bolt without any threads and a rounded head. If it didn't fall into the pan with the spring (I assume you had the pan under the filter to catch stuff), then it must be on the ground nearby. You NEED it! It goes in first, head toward the tranny with the spring over the shaft, and the small tab on the filter holds it in.
The only picture I've ever seen of it was in the Transgo shift kit instructions. This is unfortunate because every C4 has one and it is held in by the filter on every Type A valve body. New filters should come with a warning!
