I'd like to replace the 3.55 gears on my truck with 3.73 because of larger tires. Do I need to replace the front (4X4) also or can I get by with only changing the rear?
Going from a 3.55 to a 3.73 will not provide a big difference. It was a couple of years ago or so that a similiar thread was developed. The upshot was that it takes a bigger swap in gears to get a change. Like a 3.55 to a 4.11. 3.31 to 3.73 would also be a good one. For that much expense, be sure that's what you want.
I was thinking about going from 265/75 to 305/70/16 tires so I'm not quite sure if I need 4.11 gears but I will do my research before I make a decision.
265/75 should be about 10.4" wide at their widest point. The sidewall should be 7.8 inches tall, resulting a total diameter on the rim of 31.6"
305/70 should be about 12" wide. The sidewall should be about 8.4 inches tall, resulting a total diameter on the rim of 32.8"
These are estimates based on the numbered sizes and will vary a little according to the manufacturers toloranes.
total circumferance on the 265/75 would be 99.22" while on the 305/70 it would be 102.99"
265/75 would rotate about 639 times per mile
305/70 would rotate about 615 times per mile
I would leave the 3.55 considering the substantial expense. I am not sure now the speedometer on these trucks is driven but it will probably read 4-5% slower than your actual speed after the tire change based on the calculations above.
