I am wanting to put a 80mm turbo on my V10 and build the motor with forged rods and pistons as well as doing fuel and oil upgrades and 48lb injectors to make around 600 hp to the wheels. Everything else after parts will be custom piping for the manifolds and intercooler. I have been looking at doing this for awhile now and have red up on what others have done to theirs as far as turbo setups and no one has done a large turbo setup like this yet. I already have a pretty well known truck and would like to take it to the next level and do a big turbo setup.
I need help with what turbo to go with. A guy at my shop recommended a GTX4202R turbo for what I am aiming for. I also need to figure out what wastegate size I should go with, was thinking a 66mm? As for the injectors I think 48lbs would be the right amount needed. I don't know much about engines so anything that can help me figure out what all I need to do would be great!
We all love the 6.8L V10 here, and we would all love your truck all turbo'd up- but the questions you are asking should be directed to people specializing in aftermarket turbocharger set ups.
I have some experience with turbos, and I'll suggest that you choose a turbo manufacturer, and then stick with them for tech support.
I had an Incon turbo kit on a stock 88 Mustang 5.0, and it was absolutely SICK! Whenever digging into the throttle, it generated tremendous increases of power even at 0-5psi. Yes, I said Zero psi to Five psi. When it spooled up above 5 it was just insane- "wheel spin only" mode. 1st and 2nd gears were literally useless.
Coupling a turbocharger with a Torque Monster like our V10: I highly recommend you aim for no more than 8-10psi max output. (I'm not at all saying your truck would be a wheelspin machine- I think you'd break driveline parts more than you'd break traction.)
Yeah I was planning on only running like 8-12 lbs of boost and I would probably need a set of traction bars to keep the wheel hop to a minimum as well. I am going to be stopping by a local shop today that is known for performance diesels and alcohol blown motors and big mud trucks so I will have a chat with them and get a little more information from there on what they suggest.
Nothing really new other I am thinking about getting an S475 or similar turbo instead of the GTX. Price for just parts which includes turbo, watsegate, injectors, forged rods and pistons, intercooler, and gauges is going to be right around 4k add another 1k-1.5k or so for miscellaneous parts and an oil cooler and fuel system. I need to call around and find out what custom labor will cost instead of the whole setup, as shops are gonna rip me for a whole setup cost vs me buying all the parts and just getting them to install/fabricate the custom manifolds and intercooler piping.
