I have a 7.3L Power Stroke engine that comes out of a 1997 F-250 Heavy Duty. I would like to sell the engine, but was wondering how big a deal it would be if someone wanted it for say, a 2003? Is this entirely impossible? Or easily possible? Or between the two? I would like to hear from anyone that knows the engines well, or even better, if someone has done such a swap.
I have done the swap recently.
It's not too big a deal with the motor being removed handy for swap parts.
An obs timing cover will work in a SD motor, but the reservoir will drain overnight causing a start, die, start again to run scenario.
The cam has 1 difference being the lack of a fuel pump lobe on the SD cam.
Intake plenum are different.
Injectors would need to be swapped.
Freeze plug the fuel pump piston hole on a obs to seal it up.
Exhaust manifolds are identical.
Most of the core engine is the same.. the stuff that is different just bolts on.
Thanks for the reply. So more or less intake manifold, injectors, and close up fuel the fuel pump hole. Just curious here, what's the difference in injectors? As for timing cover, if you swap complete engine with the cover and all, there should be no problems with that.
Superdutys have a 17* hpop. It supplies a bit more oil for your injectors. My understanding is the 96-97's can do a straight swap to a superduty pump but the 94-95 can't. Has to do with the check valve to keep the oil from draining from the reservoir to the oil pan.

Obs hpop has to be swapped for SD hpop.
Fuel bowls are different.
Obs hpop reservoir is different than SD reservoir.
Since both engines should theoretically be on stands for the swap... it would be best to go ahead and swap the front covers. That involves pulling the oil pans, and a reseal job.
The difference between obs and SD injectors:
Obs Injectors are "single shot" injection event.
SD Injectors are split shot. Meaning a split injection event. The single shot Injectors will work in a SD but will require custom tooning.
Things from an obs engine that won't work (easily anyway) on a sd:
Thanks a lot for the information! I'll send you all some reputation. So, any one of you need the engine? It has 380K km (235K miles). Does not burn oil at all! Runs great! Starts great even in cold weather such as -25°C (-13°F) without block heater. (I only know because I had a bad cord at one time.)

Its even iffy on the 97's.
The swap i just did was a 97 motor into an 02(?if im not mistaken... yall remember what year TXtinct is?) Excursion and really wish i had swapped the front cover while the motors were both on stands. It starts and acts like it wants to run fine then dies. Restart and she's good. Either its a hit or miss thing with all the obs front covers, or the check valve in this one is failing. I read somewhere about a standpipe mod to counteract the reservoir draining but i dont remember where.
Either here in the 99-03 and obs sections or over at the nation.

And you do have a point about the shipping there. Maybe come pick it up! (I don't even know where you are... Probably a great distance away!)

Oh im just a hop skip and jump away in Victoria...
... Texas lol.
The 97 that that went into TXtinct was 750$. It came complete with injectors, turbo, ps pump, vac pump... so try to get around there for it if you can. A spare motor would be nice but a trip up that far North just isn't in the cards. Best I could do would be meet you in Richmond, Va about the middle of August.
Spare motor isn't a bad idea, but my 03 has the 6.0L. To be honest, I'm not really up to the idea of trying to do border stuff. I'll check what auto wreckers around here ask for them and go from there!
Sorry to thread jack but this is related...
Christof13T thanks for all the great info. I am doing a replacement swap on my 00 7.3 Ex and was wondering the same questions about a 1999 model Van engine (sticker on motor say 1999 but the seller told me it was from a 98 short bus? I don't know)
Do you mind telling me what all you had to swap? I have everything available from the blown engine and will have to swap oil pans anyways as one is dented. I will be picking this engine up later this week for $800 and its supposed to have 106K on it.
