I'm thinking about getting a set for my '71 F-100 with a 360 and C6- with power steering. Has anyone had to make any modifications so they would fit in these trucks?
If Hedman isn't your shot of whiskey, what do you recommend and why?
They worked for me, the only trick was figuring out moving the steering appropriately for clearance, and the correct positioning of the starter. The starter has to come off. When you put it back together, tie a string around it and have someone hold it from above while you're trying to worm things around so they'll fit. Also, when installing the top bolt into the starter, tie some dental floss around it so that when you drop it, you can get it back without having to drop the starter and header again to get it back. Actually, its kind of a pain. But they will fit, you'll get it if you're persistant. Have fun!
I just installed a set of Hedman's in my 71 360/C6. No mods were required. They fit just fine. I did have to make a change to the rear brace for my A/C to keep it. I cut it with with a cut-off wheel, turned it about 90 degrees and welded it back. I mounted it under one of the header bolts.
I just purchased a set but haven't installed them yet. My instructions say you have to unbolt the passenger side of the engine and lift it up as far as you can in order to get the header in (with the starter out). This seems a bit extreme and potentially bad for the other mounts etc...
Well it doesn't hurt the other mounts. I acutally pulled my engine as I broke a couple of the bolts while trying to remove the old exh. manifolds so I had enough room to drill out the broken bolts. I installed the headers on the engine while it was still out. I don't know I would call it extreme, but that is what it will take to install them.
I got my hedman headers in without pulling the engine or even lifting it. It says right on the directions, in bold capitals, "THEY WILL GO IN ". It is kind of tricky, though.
I appreciate all your responses. I just wanted to make sure that I didn't have to do any cutting or welding in the fender wells or on the frame rails. My stock manifolds have outlived their usefulness- developing cracks and pits. I think an upgrade is in order.
Joe - Don't know if I'm alittle late, but if these are the straight steel (not ceramic coated) you might want to invest in one more step before installing them.
The collector bracket that comes with these headers is loose and just flops around. I would have it cut off and a new one wielded to the outside (makeing it more stable and giving you better seal)
I picked up a conversion kit and am having it wielded on, then sandblasted and pianting with high-temp paint, before installing mine.
PS If everyone else already knows this - then I apologize. But the extra steps seem worth the time and mention.
Hey buddy- that sounds like a plan!!! Always glad to get a little heads up.
I may have to hold off on the headers for a while - My tranny's slipping due to a hefty workout this past weekend. I think the fella that built it for me made it sound tougher than it really was. I'm gonna do it myself this time so I'll know what's going in it.
I'll remember all the info given here about the Hedman Headers. I appreciate you guys-
