My truck site on 35's and is high enough that backing out of tight spaces requires a good circle check, to make life easier I decided to install a backup camera. Wireless didn't work out with the fuel pump hanging out back so I used a wired model:



I had a monitor installed behind my sunvisor and it worked fine but I had to drop the visor each time I was in reverse, not the end of the world but I wanted to clean things up so off to evil bay and I found this mirror with 5" display for $70:





The mirror slipped right over the mounting pad on the windshield, to route the wire I took off the sunvisor clip and put a hole behind it to fish over to the pillar. A file allowed the wire to poke out the bottom of the clip:





With the truck in anything but reverse you get the regular view (posts are the rear sliding window ribs):



And once in reverse:



Photo doesn't really do it justice, it's bright and clear. I'm pretty happy about the whole thing. Fishing the wire was the longest part but these old cabs have lots of access points and loads of room to work in.

 

I am pretty old, i doubt i could resist the need to look out to my mirrors and simply count on what is on the screen.

But i do want to know what is under that hood of yours...

 

Having a monitor does not mean you stop using good driving practices, using your mirrors is normal practice but having the monitor is a great bonus. She is still pretty filthy but here's a shot from tonight:

What's with the fuel pump location? Looks like a good way for your local fire department to get some action if you get rear-ended.

 

Could you go into more detail on the wiring of the camera its self and the monitor? I am stuck in the middle of my camera project because I cannot figure out what wires do what. Unfortunately my kit did not include instructions of any sort.

BTW that is one clean looking engine bay. Where are the air snorkels running to?

 

The location for the fuel pump was determined by the optimum flow point, the rear tank has a sump and allows a direct feed. Not for everyone but this truck takes a hard left at extreme. The hardest part was buying a brand new tank and then drilling holes in it for the sump. When I change over to fuel injection in a couple years the pump will change to the in tank style.

 

I'll see if I took some photo's of the camera install, it was a while ago. I can scan my mirror instructions and send them to you to see if that helps also.

The snorkels go to two 5" pipes welded to the upper rad support for cold air.

 

Very cool install. Not to rain on your parade or anything, but as was mentioned above, you've got to move that fuel pump. That location would be against any manufacturer recommendation and it's literally a fire bomb waiting to happen if you get rear-ended. That's an order of magnitude more dangerous than a Ford Pinto.

I know that's not the point of this thread, but your life and the lives are others are at risk with that pump there. I mean no disrespect and I don't want to discount the great work you did on the camera.

 

As an alternative, why not an inertia switch to kill the pump?

I might have to get one of those cameras for my S'Crew. After all these years it's still hard to gauge back-up clearance.

 

Scans and any pictures would be a huge help!

 

No worries and I appreciate the concern. An inertia switch is on the list for mods this spring. From a performance point of view the pump is in the perfect location and this is a toy with low seasonal miles. I need to do another's day work to finish this years mods and will include the switch.

 

Only takes one drive for some idiot to rear end you. Car fires are nasty.

This one ruined a perfectly good set of turnout gear.
