trouble finding ground
I have been having an ongoing ground problem. I thought maybe it was that my ground cable was too long, or not heavy enough guage. I just bought a 2ga 15" cable, and bolted it directly from my - battey terminal to my frame. Still nothing. I sanded down the frame on both sides of the bolt, tightened it down really tight. Does my starter solenoid need to be welll grounded on the firewall as well? because it seems these heavy guage screws are a little stripped. I just put a fresh charge on the battery, and when I turn the ignition, I get that single "click" then nothing. Sometimes, if I turn the ignition on and off a few times, it catches and starts but mostly not. Im ahving a hard time here, and am pretty good at electrical stuff, but Im stumped. Maybe someone can help.
Thanks guys.
I was out messing around, and noticed that when I messed with the batt. cable, I would get full power. I then had my lady turn the key. I would hear a single click, then my voltage meter would read "0". I fiddled with the batt. cable, and it would go back up to 14. I thought maybe my starter was binding up on my flywheel, so I gave her a few taps- voila! now she is starting every time, with full power. This is like the 4th starter I have put in. Im going to find out exactly whats going on before I take it out again, I hate being broke down in a parking lot. If it seems like Im rattling on.... well, I am.
When you fiddled with the battery cables and got 14v again which cable were you at. I've noticed with my ch@#$ cars and trucks that internal corrosion on the pos side can cause voltage to drop to zero and then go back up to battery voltage.Just a thought Kurt y-blocks rule!
