I am a diehard ford man but have never had a diesel. I am currently looking at a 2000 f-350 with the 7.3. It has 72,000 miles on it. What would be some of the obvious things that I could look for or listen for in the engine if any? I have a pretty good amount of mechanical ability but have really no experience with the Powerstroke diesel. Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks, Brent.
Go to dealer and get a coolant testing strip, and follow the instructions. That will tell you if the anti cavitation gunk is up to spec, if not, there may be a problem...
Check all visible seals, rubbers and anything else perishable, take a look at the fuel filter housing, see if it is damaged, check for damage to oil filler pipe on the engine. Look for leaks around the back of the engine, and under the tranny. The later trucks do have a lot of oil leaks.
