It seem like three years is the norm for our trucks, those battery's do take a beating, along with a cold starts, I buy the Interstate just because I shop at the farm Ag shop and it seems like I'm always in there (not for Batts) but for tractor and pump supplys. to the OP make sure you have a good Alternator 140 amp , on your gauge you don't want to see 13.2 /13.3 anytime Engine hot on a full load IE= ac on ,radio, lights, ETC, this will kill those batteries in a hurry, then your ficm will be in line, and you don't want that because bad FICM will kill the Injectors.

So I'm not sure you have said this in previous posts, but Scott, what Alternator do you run?
I had to get one from Napa Auto 140 amp, 213-3169 $ 224.00 life time
max out put-165 amp
max out put power-2114 watt
napa was the only one that had the main hot lead on the side like OEM the Others went straight back into the alum turbo tube , I wanted the DC power but maybe next time.
Does cat make any for these trucks? I have used them in a pair of kenworth trucks this year and instead of the John deere batteries and noticed a HUGE difference. Largely thanks to the increase of CCA. The john deere bats were 650 I think and the cats were like 1000!
I had a customer in a month ago with cat batteries. I don't have any info on them,, but they looked tough,, rope handles n all. Lol.
But besides the batteries, with the truck sitting we should think about trickle charging them. With a dual battery system such as ours and most other diesel trucks, you need to pull a ground wire off one of the batts to charge them independently or even check their resting voltage. A fellow FTE'er turned many of us on to one charger: BatteryMinder that does a very sophisticated charge, one that might help your batts live longer.
Diesel_Dan..... With the Battery Minder, does the ground wire have to be off or can I just connect the BatteryMinder to the terminals? Also, with the dual battery system, does one need two BatteryMinders?
Your factory batteries lasted 8 years? Mine did too, that's why I went back with the Motorcrafts. The only difference is the new ones don't have the sight glass on top. I put my new ones in 1.5 years ago and they are still strong.

Thank you in advance. Jeremy
You only need one BatteryMinder, and you don't have to disconnect anything, just attach the charger to one battery....and that's it.

I don't think it is "required", but for longer term truck-sitting-around, I do separate them and put a BatteryMinder on each...
I bought two anyway as they were (1) on sale then and (2) I have 15 batteries in different active service that need charging sometimes, but desulfating as I cycle through them all...
Batteries are like oil. Get the highest CCA and CCR that you can afford from a supplier that services most of the areas you will encounter. The best warranty in the world does no good if your in BFE and there's no dealer around.

Great advice....and if your truck sits more than 2 days at a time, put a smart charger/maintainer on them to keep the batteries healthy at all times. Healthy batteries = happy FICM and more.
