1988 ford f150 alternator

i have a 1988 ford f150 and we are having problems with the alternator. Its brand new and it still aint charging right. I read somewhere that there is expose to be a fusible link between the alternator and the battery. if there is expose to be a fuse there what size is it expose to be? and we had to replace a few wires that got burnt. i dont think we used the right gauge wire.

It is not a fuse. It is a fusible link of wire.
It would be located at the battery side of the starter solenoid on the fender.
