My AOD swap

The time has finally come where I have started working on swapping out my C4 for an AOD.

I bought the trans off Craigslist from a guy who was going to use it in his mustang, but decided to go with a t5 instead. I got the complete tranny and TC for $150. He said it worked.

Yesterday, I finally started taking it apart with the intention to do a minor overhaul and a shift kit before I put it in the truck. I got the pan off and filter out. They were pretty clean. Some clutch material, but not a lot at all. The filter looked very clean. I pulled the valve body off and the internal passages are almost spotless.

So being that the tranny is this clean, and the fact that it was supposed to be working well. I'm just gonna slap a trans-go shift kit in it with a new TC and run it as is. I do have to buy a lokar TV cable to hook it up to my edelbrock carb, but that's less than $80. I will also be heading to the junkyard in the next few days to source a dipstick and tube.

Then once the tranny is in, I'll be switching to a 3.90 rear gear and installing a limited slip for better traction off road, and more grip and fun on pavement.

That sounds like a heck of a deal. I am looking for stuff on CL and nothing hardly ever shows up. Mostly just SBC crap.....

The clutch material might be the OD band. The lining has been known to separate from the band if the transmission has been sitting.

Today I put a plug in the pan. Drilled a 1/2" hole in it. Then bolted a 1/2-20 nut to the bottom and welded it on. I used a 1/2-20 magnetic plug in it.

Tomorrow I'm going to order a shift kit and torque converter

What ever stock is. I'm going to spec it for a f150 with a 5.8.

Went to the junkyard this morning and pulled a dipstick and tube from a T-bird. Looks like it will fit in the truck without any modifications. Maybe I'll have to bend it a little but for the most part it looks good.

I paid $5 for it, as compared to buying a LOKAR tube/stick for $80. I'm happy!

Hmm, I should know by now. Double the estimated price. Parts snuck up on me kinda fast. Oh well, I need them.

I'm still hunting for the best deal on a TV cable. I'm bidding on one on eBay for about $50 right now. If that fails, US Auto Parts sells them for $68.

The Transgo reprogramming kit that I'm after is $90 from summit. Over $100 everywhere else it seems.

Carefull here 351. As I recall you put a bit of cam in the 351C. Ya gotta match the TQ to the cam so they "come in" together. I'd call a tech guy at Hugh's Convertors here in town.

Yeah Jeff, I've looked into it. Stock stall speed for the aid converters was around 1800. That's a little looser than my current C4 stall. It stalls around 1600. So it should help me get off the line a little better. Plus, this stock converter was only $80. Any performance converter would be double that at least..

Well my trans-go kit should be here today. That's the only thing I'm waiting on to get it back together.

Did you change the front seal? I would now rather than later. Put a little synthetic oil or vaseline on the inner part of that new seal so's it's not dry on initial start up. And don't forget to put a little fluid in the TQ when installing it and the tranny. Looking forward to your write up all excited after the 1st test beat!

Trans-go reprogramming kit showed up today.
http://m.summitracing.com/parts/trg-aod-hp

Along with the geometry bracket to adapt my edelbrock to the new tv cable.
http://m.summitracing.com/parts/sum-700203

Now I have everything needed to get the tranny back together.

I still need to buy a tv cable. I'm gonna get this lokar unit.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/161315509792

Once I get the tranny back together and the cable shows up, I'll set to work pulling the C4 and putting my new AOD in place.

Do you have access to pressure gauge and hose to set the pressure on the trans on start up?

Those AODs smoke really quick if it is not set correctly.
