fuel leak

I have a '89 Bronco II that has a major fuel leak. It seems to be coming from the outlet tube from the fuel pump on top of the tank. I have tried changing the fuel line only thinking it was just the fitting that went bad, but it is still spraying gas whenever I start it up. I think I will have to drop the tank and change the fuel pump. My questions are: 1 – Do I have to change the pump or can I just change the outlet tube and 2 - Does anyone know how the fuel pump is connected to the tank? It seems to be some kind of locking ring; does this just screw off? I certainly appreciate your comments.
Thanks

Welcome to FTE!!!

I think you will have to change the pump and the ring spins off, you might have the use a screwdriver and hammer to loosen it.

Thanks Ken! Any tips on dropping the tank? I never done one before but it doesn't seem too hard.

Thanks

Make sure you disconnect the fuel and return lines and power before you drop the tank. Take a piece on plywood and a jack and place it in the center of the tank. Disconnect the straps and filler tube and lower the tank. After the tank is out, cut a hole in the floor and build a access door to get to the pump in the future.
Did you by chance change the fuel filter lately? It sounds like the pump is working, but something is blocking the flow. Is the filter on the right way? It should have a arrow on it to tell you.

Hell_Fish:

Thanks for the info. Yes, I changed the fuel filter yesterday because I thought like you did; something was blocking the flow, but it continued to leak. Has anyone ever heard of anything else that would impede the flow or have had a similar problem on the outlet tube? It's tough to actually see where the leak is coming from as when its started up, gas is spraying allover, but it does seem to be the tube itself. The fuel pump itself does seem to be working fine as the engine starts up ok, its just the leak that is the problem as far as I can figure out.

This might be a stupid question, especially in reference to you access door suggestion, but is it really necessary to drop the tank or is there enough clearance to pull out the pump with the tank in its normal position or dropped slightly.

Sure appreciate the answers!

Yep, the pump/sender is about a foot long together. No way around it. I tried when mine went out. Also, be ready to fight the filler hose back on. Soak it in silicone while you worl on the rest of it, or only unscrew it from the body.

I would try to drain as much gas out as possible, 10 gals will add 70-80 more pounds to mess around with while your under the truck.
