This weekend the rear window on my '88 bronco quit working. The motor still runs but it seems like the gear must be slipping. I removed the access panel to troubleshoot it. The motor will engage the gears during part of the window travel up and down but will not move it completely up or completely down. I haven't dismantled the interior yet, was hoping someone could tell me what needs to be done. Thanks.
I had a similar problem with mine. It would move partially and then get stuck. I found that the window was sliding out of the rail on the gear arm. If I would move the window too far up or down it would slide out and be "off track". It was a simple fix. I drilled a hole in the rail and put a screw and nut through it. Now the hardware on the rail won't pass the screw and nut I installed. It is a very basic end stop for the window rail. No more problem. I have seen it all on the back window of broncos. They are nothing but trouble for the unsuspecting driver. This is an excellent site for solutions to all the problems of a bronco rear window. Good Luck!
Replace the large plastic gear inside the motor - the updated part is much more durable. If it still binds, make sure the felt runs inside the t/g and the camper shell are clean & clear, and spray some silicone lube into them. Also, make sure the t/g strike bolts are aligned so the t/g closes fully, and that the camper shell is bolted down tightly and aligned.
Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks for the info on this page. I tackled the rear window problem this weekend and everything worked fine due to the good advice I've received on this site. I removed the weatherstripping, then the back glass to get to the window motor, got it out and found the plastic gear inside in many pieces. Replaced the gear, reassembled everything (without breaking the glass) and everything works. Thanks again.
Where did you source your gear from? Mine broke this morning and Ford wants $50 for it. I haven't look around much yet though...
My harmonic balancer also broke into its constituent pieces about 30 miles from home, then I broke the puller that my wife graciously brought me 50 miles from where she works. What a day.
I must be having bad luck with my tailgate this month, first the plastic clip on the window safety linkage gets brittle and breaks.
need to know wear where I can find one of those by the way.
Now this past weekend, the window motor takes a dump, both switches won't open the window and It gets power to the motor.
help me
I got my gear from the Ford dealership, it was $20. However, all my work has been for naught - my son wrecked the Bronco Saturday afternoon and the whole right side and rearend, really the entire body is shot. So, anyone want to buy a wrecked '88 model Bronco with only 88k original miles on it, for parts? It's still driveable, located in North Alabama.
bigric, you are right in assuming that he was not injured - in the wreck anyhow. One of the reasons I put him in the Bronco was for the protection of a big vehicle around him, and it payed off in this instance. He had a friend with him also and neither of them even had a scratch, we were very thankful for that. Vehicles can be replaced but a life cannot.
Steve, unfortunately I only had liability on it so it will not be replaced. I took a gamble and lost, full coverage was so expensive on my son that I would save enough to pay for it after about three years by having just liability. I live in Hartselle, just south of Decatur which is not far from Moulton.
Glad to hear everyone, save the bronco, is OK.
On the t/g issue, the window on my 96 works with the key but not the switch up front. I would assume this is a wiring problem. What are the common trouble spots for this?
