So I bought a 1967 F100 for my son as an opportunity for us to learn how to work on trucks together. I already have a problem. I replaced the starter once already after having it one day. Then since the new starter has been installed I have started maybe three times and the starter is dead again. The teeth are literally eaten away. The truck has a 460 in it but I think its the original transmission. The original starter I pulled was for a 1967 F100 V6 with automatic transmission. I have a manual transmission. Are you supposed to use a starter that is built for the engine size or for the transmission since it is actually attached to tranny. I'm new at this so any help would be appreciated.
If it is running a nonstock configuration you need to order parts according to the system- not the year truck. And a V6 wasn't offered in these rigs.
For example I cannot order a ps steering box for my 73 cuz its got a 79 Bronco steering system.
I think you installed the wrong starter for a small block or six that doesn't have enough stickout to properly mesh with the flywheel. It may fit but doesn't fit right.
What trans ya running? Figurenthantout, define what year truck it came with, and order a starter for that combo.
Sounds like the wrong starter to me. Are you positive its a 460? Generally when you order a starter its for the motor tranny combo, say 460/auto(C6). Ford starters are really easy installs, they just bolt in with no shimming. 460 motors were not in the earlier Fords either not to say someone didn't install one.
I'm not sure what transmission it is. The guy I bought the truck from said it was a 460 pulled out of a Lincoln. I think 1985. He never said what transmission it had. How can I find out.

Manual trannies usually have a tag riveted on 'em. Crawl under there a nd start looking around. It's time for you to be a sleuth and figure out for a fact what yer working with.
Ok ill check tomorrow. I found D9TE-AB stamped on the engine block. I guess I need to make sure it is actually a 460. Does anyone have the decoder for this
Casting numbers aren't much help except for determining the year of engineering and model line designation.
D is 1970
9 is year 9 (1979)
T means truck
E means engine component
And there were no lincoln trucks in the 80s
A better way is to visually verify. I'm guessing its either a 351M/400 or a 460. How mnany valve cover bolt? Post a pic of the engine or compare yours with pics of engines here in FTE.
That is indead a 460. Late 1979 and newer. Truck or Econoline van. Unless I missed something I am assuming it is an automatic tranny. If it is a 3 speed automatic that would make it a C6. For a A/T starter application go with 1979 F250 460 a/t. For a M/T application go with 1996 F250 m/t. Just to pick a year.
It's actually a manual transmission. So you are saying I need a starter from a 1996 f250 manual transmission truck. How will I know if bolts and teeth of starter/flywheel will line up
Is it a 4 speed or a 5 speed? Does it use a mechanical linkage clutch or a hydraulic clutch? Not being too familiar with 460's, was it fitted with T-18/19's or NP 435's instead of a C-6 during 73-79? I know it was used with a manual in the 80's. Could the PO have used a 351M/400 bellhousing in front of the original T-18/NP 435? Would the starter from a 351M/400 fit the 460? Just some thoughts I had.
I would never sell my truck due to it having been my grandfathers, I have wondered if I expired how the next fellow would fare finding correct parts for it. I had thought about putting a little notebook in the glove box of everything I have changed out to help me remember......

I'm sorry but you will have to slow down. Lol. Your speaking a foreign language to me. I don't know much but I'm trying to learn. I will crawl under there today and look. I will also take some pics. I do know it's a 4 speed though
