My wife drives a Chebby Hoe with 17" Mondera Davanti SUV rims. Last week our friend tried to rotate the tires and stripped the adapter that "unlocks" the one lockable lug nut on each wheel . Has this occured to anyone and what can be done to take the wheels off now? I'm in Iraq and the Hoe's brakes need looked at too...Heeelp!!! I can email suggestions back to my wife..... In advance, thanks.
Take it to a Chevy dealer and have a "master" mechanic take them off with an air chisel. They sell wheel lock removers at northerntools.com in their automotive catalog. About $40 a set.
If they can get to the outside edge, I had a lock with no key on a Corvette I bought. The tire guy drove a slightly smaller impact socket over it with a BFH, and impacted it off. Probably have to try metric and SAE both to get that "squeek" fit.
When I had the 4.30s put in my Cobra the gear shop didn't notice the lug nut key laying on the seat where I left it for them. They ended up using Vise-Grips. That must've been some trick because the lugs are just about flush with the outer face of the wheels.
When I took my Taurus in to have the tranny rebuilt, I told the shop that the wheel locks on the front were pretty worn and to leave them off, and I would replace them with regular lug nuts. So what did they do?
THEY PUT 'EM BACK ON!!
Of course they were so worn the key wouldn't work. A buddy of mine welded regular lug buts on to them and then we took them off.
I had the same problem.......twice
1st time I hammered a 12 point socket over it.
2nd time there wasn't enough room between the lug nut and wheel to fit a socket so I welded a bolt to it.
To all that replied,
Thank you for the bits and pieces of advice.... Sent it to the wife. We will use this to get the da%$ thing off.
