first "heavy" tow
had kind of a vet emergency and had to haul a horse into the clinic. at the drop of a hat we had to figure out how to get a horse that has never been in a trailer loaded up, and what to do with our 21 month old son.
the Super Duty serves as the dedicated horse puller with the 79 as a backup. but the 79 isn't licensed yet this year and has no car seat anyway. the SD doesn't usually serve as a family hauler, and removing the car seat from the expedition to the SD takes nothing short of a half hour.
solution:
no reason the expedition can't pull a stock trailer with one little philly onboard. Sorry, this pic is with the trailer empty, i couldn't get a pic with the trailer loaded
handled it like a pro. rear end is a little softer than i'd like as a dedicated hauler, but that's not it's primary function (not the horses, anyway). But that is one of the reasons i wanted something bigger than the explorer. no way would i do this with an explorer, but the expo was fairly comfortable with the load. even without trailer brakes (i know, shame on me), it felt very controllable.
trailer weighs about 3200 and the philly is around 800. with her up front it was quite a bit of tongue weight, but all in all a successful trip.
80 uneventful round trip miles.
