So, I just bought a '87 F150, 399,542 miles on the 302 Windsor and a C6 tranny. Sadly, it doesn't run, but for this post that's totally irrelevant!
Anyways, with this many miles on it, the hood, roof, and bed are pretty rusty (cab corners and floor pans survived somehow), I'm planning on removing the bed so I can paint the cab, and I was thinking to build a wooden flat bed on the back to replace the bed. I do contracting, so the flatbed would be nice, along with being more versatile than the standard bed, but I'm wondering
a. How to remove the bed
and
b. If anyone else has a 8th gen (1987 - 1991) F150 with a stake bed.
To remove the bed all you have to do is remove the bolts that are in the bed (I forgot how many I think it is 6 or 8) disconnect the fuel filler hose(hoses if you have dual tanks) and get a few buddies and lift the bed off and pull it out of the way. If you have the money I would replace the fuel pumps to while you are their because later on dropping the tank will suck.
My dad's truck isn't really a stake bed (we still have to make some taller stakes) and it isn't wooden (we don't like wood flatbeds) but here is a pic of my dad's 89 F250 4x4 351 ZF5 with a pure steel flatbed. (the side stakes on this truck weight as much as one of the doors on the truck literally).

Pulling a bed is nothing. You take the bolts out of it( which you can see the heads of on the bed floor) remove your tailgate to make it easier, unplug the taillight harnesses, remove fuel filler neck tube(s), and just lift. It can be done with yourself and another strapping person, it just sucks. The more people the better.
