Does anyone know if the front wheels have to rotate a certain amount before the hubs will lock into 4x4 when they're in the auto setting? This morning, I had to get out of the truck and manually lock them in - just want to check to see what you guys think before I go to the dealer...
Try driving around a field or dirt road to check for yourself. You may find you don't have any problem at all. If you were trying to back up then that may be where you caused the hub not to lock. You do need to move forward to complete the lock-in. I don't believe you MUST drive "x" amount of distance, just move forward tp lock the hub.
Actually it is the axle shafts which need to rotate for the hubs to engage. The problem is that is tough to do unless you are either moving or stuck and spinning your back tires.
I've noticed that in situations like you're describing, that I can put the truck in nuetral, step on the brake and put it in 4 low and my auto hubs engage. This has proven very helpful when I get into an area where I can't go forward w/out 4wd and can't get it to lock into 4 hi without rolling. Once I get out of the slippery spot, I go through that same procedure and shift into 4 hi once rolling.
That was the situation for me over the weekend. I was nose up to a fence and on slippery grass on a side hill. The rear wheels started to spin and I turned the switch to 4hi and nothing happened - and I could only move forward so far.
That's a great idea, Keith - I'll try that next time.
