Question What should I Do???

So in the past month or so, I have done all of the following to my Ex. 4” BDS Lift, HNCUSA.Com Bumper w/ 12k Winch, Mag-Hytec Diff Covers, Bullet Proof Diesel EGR, River City Diesel Coolant Filtration Kit and Mishimoto turbo pipes. Additionally, my Ex already has an Edge programer (used for monitoring, not for programing) AFE Intake and a MBRP 4” Exhaust.

I have current indications that my FICM is on its way out, so here is my question. If I were going to drop MORE coin into my Ex, beyond the FICM and head bolts, what should I be looking to do to the ex?

I am contemplating the following:
  • Re-gear the diffs? I am running 35's...
  • Engine Oil Cooler, oil filter, heavy duty cooler system?
  • Fuel pump/filter system?
  • Sinister Diesel External Oil Filter System?

I also would not mind getting a Mag-Hytec Transmission Pan, with a flush and new fluids. I am also liking the look of some bolt on traction bars...

So what am I missing, what should I be thinking about that I am not?

Thank you all for the help!

One piece lights (perhaps with a proper HID projector retrofit), 08+ mirrors, tuner with basic daily use tunes...

There's also something to be said for a thorough field day of a vehicle, why not get it fully steam cleaned and detailed to the 9's?

I think I will pass on the headlights, I honestly do not mind the stock ones that I am running. I am also not a big fan of HIDs, however, i may look into LED headlights. The same goes for the mirrors, I like the rounded tow mirrors that I have, but I may keep an eye out for the F250/350 ones with the marker lights. Not real interested in a tuner at this time, but an SCT may be in the cards a year or two from now.

As for a good field day, that is an idea that I might look into, as the Ex could use a good overhaul, especially a good wax.

Thanks for sharing your ideas!

I know what active duty military pay allows for, so I would do what needs to be done to keep it safe, reliable, legal, and most importantly operational. Then when time, money, and family allow go for the above and beyond stuff. In my opinion do what needs doing, then save for the rest. It's what I'm doing now even if not in the military anymore the 3 working on 4 kids and one income don't necessarily allow for epic builds of any kind. . Do what you can when you can and don't sweat the small stuff

If you are just looking for something to do, have someone check out your tranny if you haven't already and make sure its all sealed and happy. Might keep you from ending up in the shop like me

If not running an SCT tuner that would be my first choice. There is no comparison between the stock tune and even a mild performance tune. The giggle factor from driving a tuned Excursion is pretty big, imo.............

Good idea, and I am thinking about at least dropping the pan, replacing it, the fluids and the filter.

I am not into the tuners, I have the Edge that I have now, because it is a decent monitor, and it came with the truck.

Here is the list that I am thinking of doing IF I can get the cash flow right:

· Head studs
· FICM (mine is about dead, this has to be done!)
· Bolt-On Traction Bars
· Transmission Pan, filter, fluids
· Engine Oil Cooler, oil filter, heavy duty cooler
· Fuel pump/filter system, Blue Spring, Fuel return system

This list might just break the bank

I would do what is neccessary to keep it on the road. Maghytech pan and traction bars aren't absolutely neccessary IMO. Sure does look shiny though and would match. Start with the 6.0 issues that need to be finished and work from there. Once you tear into the engine you may run into something else.

Oh, I agree, the trans pan was just something I was going to throw in there when I have him service the tranny. I would pretty much be doing what I did when I got the covers for the diffs. Just taking the chance to upgrade while doing other things.

As for the traction bars, with a lift, even a new one like mine, it never hurts to minimize any potential for axle wrap.

I did stay away from my non essential list of stuff, when looking at what might just need to be done.

Love the look you got going on with your Ex. My opinion is like the others, work on bulletproofing the mechanics. I am starting my build with the engine, adding the oil cooler, head studs and heads machined with new sensors (IPR and ICP) going in. Also new water pump and a couple of other thing dealing with the serpentine belt and turbo updates. Main purpose was to keep the Ex pointed down the road and cure some the issues I was having with surging and some others.

Longevity Mods are the ones I would do first...BEFORE custom tuning and performance upgrades.

In this order:

FICM with Atlas 40 upgrade
Headstuds
Trans Service and Pans
Oil Cooling Upgrades
Fuel System Upgrades
Intercooler Upgrade
Turbo Upgrade
Custom Tuning
Now you need Traction! So...traction bars!
