timing starting blah

Okay, second time typing this out today, but I just did a cam swap, lifters, rockers, etc etc, timing chain had three marks, a o r , assuming a is advanced, o is zero, and r is retarded, I set the camshaft markings to the zero point on the camshaft, dowl facing upwards, was unsure if I had it right, so I tore it down, and sure it was right, good enough, back together it goes, set what I figure is TDC on number one, drop in dist. try, nothing...no back fire, no nothing, figure in 180 degrees out, pull the plug, hand roll motor, screw driver in hole, drop in dist. rotor is facing number one plug wire, start...yeah no start.. its rolling over, starter is doing its job but the motor wont catch.... what in the hell am I missing?

adding too

Okay, now let me go further, apparently my pushrods are too loose inside of the roller rockers, hydraulic lifters, roller rockers, wait until exhaust moves, tighten intake, zero lash, half turn, that's all fine and good, repeat, cylinder by cylinder repeat to keep it idiot proof, NOW when the dist. drops down a little bit inside of the lower intake it sounds like ****, I manually held the dist. up, and got a back fire. My keeper bolt/plate does not look like a normal one... anything I could have lost/broke/screwed up down there, considering I never touched that part of the motor....how is the dist. supposed to be seated? Pictures will help me here, if you guys need any... I will attempt..

First off, what motor do you have? Small block? FE? 300? Big block?

The distributor should seat completly to the block and engage the oil pump driveshaft.

0* initial timing isnt nearly enough. Take it up to about 10-12* and you should start to get fire.

right, my brain was gone, 390, timing on the harmonic balancer is about 15 degrees at TDC, drop the dist. all the way down flush with the lower intake manifold and it does nothing...unless the teeth on the dist are shot, but they don't look bad. I am getting oil pressure when it turns over

Possibly. But doubtful. Have you checked that your points are opening and closing?

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

Here's a tutorial Bob put together: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/67...-pictures.html Bob's link is not working. Can someone in the know tell me why?

The distributor seats IN THE BLOCK, not the intake. It should drop down solid. You should not have to hold it up to get it to run.

TDC on compression stroke. Bump motor around with finger over #1 hole and wait for big WHOOSH of air. Now watch balancer and set to TDC and install distributor with rotor pointing to #1 on the cap.

Typically the two timing marks on the cam/crank will between TOWARDS each other
(sorry it is a chevy picture, but it was all I could find quickly. Ignore everything else about the pic, just the two timing marks):

timing marks are 100 percent lined up, tore it down yesterday, double checked to make sure, I have oil pressure, rotor is moving, unless it is inside of the dist. itself, that I will check. it seats down, but nothing. pulled valve covers, hand rolled motor until both valves didn't move, screw driver in number one, piston was there, 15 degrees timing. im thinking its wires possibly, but I had spark against the lower intake when turning it over.. so I dunno
