Hey guys, home sick today so I got some time to do some thinking about my truck and the future plans for it. As you know, I have the zf6 and while I love the transmission I would like to be able to cruise down the road at a little lower RPM. I've seen it mentioned on here before and other places about having a splitter.
Who here has a splitter? How do you like it? How much does it change your cruising RPM? Has your mileage improved at all? How is reliability? Could I push 400 hp and be ok?
Alot of questions I know, but I am trying to figure out if this would be a good investment or not.
I thought about doing this on my truck too...but then I did the calculations to determine the break-even point. Here is a calculator I wrote to determine the break-even point. Enter your data into the yellow highlighted areas only. For me (I drive less than 5000 miles per year) and I get about 14 mpg, if I got a 15% increase in fuel mileage and fuel costs $4.25/gal it would take 20 years to recoup the cost of the unit ($4000 installed). If I drove more and/or fuel prices went up, the time to break-even would drop.
Baatzy,
I looked into a Gear Vendor unit several years ago when diesel prices shot up. I was not convinced my mpg would change drastically enough to pay back the investments so I did not pull the trigger with the almost $4000 cost plus I read numerous reviews about the unit failing for various reasons. One of these type units might be worth it if you do a lot of hauling/traveling, etc.
Good luck,
Awhile back I noticed that a 5mph increase cost me about 2.5 mpg, so I did some calculations and figured at $3500 it would take me 65,000 miles to pay off, which at this point just over a year(currently averaging 1000 miles a week). I have also heard of the sometimes questionable reliability of these units. Thats why I thought I would check.
Ok guys I have a Gearvendors on my 2000 CC 4x4 6sp. I love it when towing gives me a gear for any kind of traffic or hill. I am able to run down the highway at 75 with out much change in mileage good or bad when empty. I have 3.73 gears. I think if you have 4.10 or lower it would work great for mileage. I use it mostly for towing and some on the interstate when empty. If you check eBay and craigslist you can find them reasonably priced. I had an aluminum one piece drive-shaft made for it. I had a steel one and could not get it quit vibrating. Had the drive shaft made by "Driveshaft Specialists Inc". in Texas and they were great, also very helpful.
