My buddy has a 2000 Eddie Bauer Expedition. He just purchased a in dash double din, DVD monitor/player off ebay. www.rosenentertainment.com
He wants to add an amplifier and I was wondering if we could use the factory wires? I'd like to tap into them behind the head unit but am worried there may be a factory amp somewhere in the line. Is there??
I do know there's a factory amp next to the sub, I plan on bypassing that and wiring the new amp straight to the sub.
Are there any other amps other than the sub amp?
We are not interested in thumping down the street, so using the factory wires is sufficient for our needs.
And do you guys know of a good website that shows the wiring diagram for the 2000 EB?
I did the same thing at first with mine to keep the rear controls.... BUT after a while I decided that SOUND was more important than convenience.... Yes you can tap into the MAIN plug... I don't have the schematic any more, but if your buddy gets the Amp from crutchfield, they will detail the wires over the phone for you once the Amp arrives... The only issue was the remote turn on... took 2 tries
Thanks! So the 4 speakers in the doors are powered off the factory head unit right?
What was the problem with the remote turn on? I hear the factory remote turn on does not send enough voltage to the aftermarket amps to actually turn it on.
Did you use the factory remote turn on for your amp? If so, why did it take two tries?
The 4 speakers are powered off the amp. The Factory amp. is in the dash, directly behind and below the radio. A double din unit may not fit in the dash, even thought the factory unit looks like a double din. Once removed, you will see the factory unit has a large faceplate, but tapers down to a din-sized unit to fit in the dash. You will see what I mean once removed. For a turn-on lead, all you need is a switched 12v source, An aftermarket head unit will have this lead, sometimes it is called the "power antenna" lead. Since you are using an aftermarket amp, you will need to run an RCA-type cable for signal. Get a cable with the turn -on lead built-in, and your problem is solved. Hook one end to the head unit's turn on, the other to the amp. Don't even try to mess with those speaker-type high level connections for an amp. They usually do not sound as good as a low-level RCA-type connection, and usually lead to a ground whistle noise. Hope this helps............
You can fit a smaller amp in your console if you're willing to give up some space. I havemy amp for the door speakers mounted on the passenger side of my console, it's screwed to the inside wall. There's not a problem at all with heat, it's never shut down and I thump some SERIOUS tunes.
I agree with the RCA cables over using the stock speaker wires, been there, done that and it's not pretty.
