Yes. i have a 1995 Ford Ranger with 4.0v6 and 5speed tranny. I got the truck with 65,xxx miles and it now has almost 92,xxx. THose miles are from about a year and a half. I have ran the truck real hard, I mean I have went trough about three sets of tires. I have a K&N air filter and free flow exhaust. Well i decided i would try to sell it and i needed a oil change right then. I had some GTX 20w 50 oil sitting in house and i decided to use it since i wasn't planning on having truck much longer. well now i have put almost 600miles on the truck and it looks like i might be keeping it for a while longer. Under the hood on the front clip there is a big sticker saying 10w30 oil only. haha. So is the 50 weight bad for the motor. It has been really hot here past few weeks. And my temp guage has actually went down normally than usual, so the motor is running cooler... So should i change oil or let the mix in it run its coarse. Oil pressure has been the same too. thanks
You have an "IDIOT LIGHT" type of oil pressure gauge, so you
will not see any variations in oil pressure. The oil pressure
sending unit is a switch which closes with about 7PSI of oil
pressure, and the gauge will read about 1/2 scale.....
It's summertime. Run the 20W50 until the next oil change. At your present rate, that should be sometime around labor day. At that point, decide what weight oil you really want to use.
I personally am a strong proponent of higher vis oil as you approach & exceed 100K, especially if worked hard. The benefits FAR OUTWEIGH any risks, especially when it's hot summer weather. If it were me, I'd keep running the 20W-50.
Hey, I run the same oil as you, prodigy... the Castrol GTX 20W50, and I dunno what oil it had before (I got my truck after an oil change, and I just recently did the oil change) but the GTX 20W50 works MUCH better than the oil that was in it before. I think my truck used to be driven hard sometimes, like, mostly when it was been 4 wheeled. It pulled out a stuck Suburban one time, too. It has 327,500 miles and drives great. I recently started having a problem with water getting into the oil because I made a mistake one morning and caused it to overheat. If that never happened, the engine would still be running perfect!
I run 20w-50 in the summer. For one it increases compression and doesn't break down and leak out as fast as lighter weight oils. Technically, the higher weight oils are meant for hi revving motors such as race engines. I use 10w-30 in the winter and 20w-50 in the summer. Both work fine for me and the engine does stay cooler in the summer.
