1997 F350 Dually/7.3 PSD. En-route from Tallahassee to Slidell, LA I used 6 qts of oil. We were towing our 12,000 lb fifth wheel and when we got settled I took the truck over to the Ford dealer. They called a bit ago and said that the 'O' ring on the High Pressure Oil Pump had failed and the pump needed to be replaced ($$$$), I asked can you just replace the 'O' ring and was told no, had to replace the entire pump. Since I know diddly-squat about that pump I am hoping some of you can enlighten me. Am I being taken to the cleaners (I hope not) or is Ford doing the best and right thing?
If they mean the "non-serviceable plug" on the bottom of the HPOP, then as far as Ford knows, no it can't be replaced. However, the aftermarket is a beautiful thing! Serviceable Long Threaded HPOP Plug - Riffraff Diesel Performance
There are quite a few parts and pieces of the HPOP that are sealed with o-rings, so it's hard to know for sure what they're talking about.
I will say, however that a new, upgraded aftermarket HPOP called the Terminator 500 is available for $449 from that same website and it's not an impossible job for someone who is a decent shade tree mechanic. Terminator T500 HPOP - Riffraff Diesel Performance
Ford dealer quoted me $1500.00 and change for a new pump...although my heart stopped after I looked at the cost of replacement pumps I don't think it was out of line. Since I am on the road the chances of me changing it myself was not an option, but I will ask for the old pump and see what I can do when I get back home.
Currently in Slidell, LA and I am picking up the truck this afternoon from the dealer. I appreciate the offer but it is too late. However I did call the service manager this morning and told them I wanted to old pump, sooooooo I may a rebuildable pump to seek/swap for something I just have to have....I haven't figured that out yet.

Yeah. being that cores for pumps are worth a lot of money, they better give it to you, they just trash em.
Sorry you were in a rush man. =\
(by a lot of money, i dont mean you'll get rich. I mean they are not in high supply)
I doubt they will GIVE you the old core. You'd have to pay the core charge to get it back.
Ford has to send them in for a core like everyone else, and I'm not sure what Ford's core charge is, something like $300 - $400 I think. ??
I doubt they would upgrade to the SD pump either. Some dealers don't know it's not a big deal to do that, and then there's the core charge again. Like-for-like core charge makes that kind of upgrade expensive.
