Question High Pressure Oil Pump

1997 F350 Dually/7.3 PSD. En-route from Tallahassee to Slidell, LA I used 6 qts of oil. We were towing our 12,000 lb fifth wheel and when we got settled I took the truck over to the Ford dealer. They called a bit ago and said that the 'O' ring on the High Pressure Oil Pump had failed and the pump needed to be replaced ($$$$), I asked can you just replace the 'O' ring and was told no, had to replace the entire pump. Since I know diddly-squat about that pump I am hoping some of you can enlighten me. Am I being taken to the cleaners (I hope not) or is Ford doing the best and right thing?

Thanks for the help.
Kent

Kent, depends which o-rings, internal or external, ask them.

Riffraff diesel sells an o-ring kit for external HPOP connections ...

If they mean the "non-serviceable plug" on the bottom of the HPOP, then as far as Ford knows, no it can't be replaced. However, the aftermarket is a beautiful thing!

There are quite a few parts and pieces of the HPOP that are sealed with o-rings, so it's hard to know for sure what they're talking about.

I will say, however that a new, upgraded aftermarket HPOP called the Terminator 500 is available for $449 from that same website and it's not an impossible job for someone who is a decent shade tree mechanic.

Ford dealer quoted me $1500.00 and change for a new pump...although my heart stopped after I looked at the cost of replacement pumps I don't think it was out of line. Since I am on the road the chances of me changing it myself was not an option, but I will ask for the old pump and see what I can do when I get back home.

Thanks for all the info.

If your going to let them do it, ask for a SD pump, 99 thru 2003. Should be the same price but its a little bit better pump.

IPR o-ring or one of the HP oil lines are leaking.

The actual seal for the HPop to the oil res doesnt' often leak unless you fuss with it.

So, there are basically 4 points the pump can leak. and 3 of them are o-rings easily replaced, the 4th is a gasket that rarely leaks.

Usually the High Pressure Oil lines out the top of the pump are what are leaking.

Have the person working on the truck physically show you where the leak is.

You can see the 2 lines on the top easily, you cannot see the IPR, its under the pump.

The o-ring on that usually if it leaks, the truck will run funny.

Currently in Slidell, LA and I am picking up the truck this afternoon from the dealer. I appreciate the offer but it is too late. However I did call the service manager this morning and told them I wanted to old pump, sooooooo I may a rebuildable pump to seek/swap for something I just have to have....I haven't figured that out yet.

Yeah. being that cores for pumps are worth a lot of money, they better give it to you, they just trash em.

Sorry you were in a rush man. =\

(by a lot of money, i dont mean you'll get rich. I mean they are not in high supply)

I doubt they will GIVE you the old core. You'd have to pay the core charge to get it back.
Ford has to send them in for a core like everyone else, and I'm not sure what Ford's core charge is, something like $300 - $400 I think. ??

I doubt they would upgrade to the SD pump either. Some dealers don't know it's not a big deal to do that, and then there's the core charge again. Like-for-like core charge makes that kind of upgrade expensive.

Keep us posted how you made out.
