tune up specs.....
I need some specs though if someone could help for a 59 223
I did the points to .016
plug gaps to about .032
What should my timing be ??
(points were .010 and plugs .040)
I just timed it by ear and then blasted down the highway with no ping, but sure has more pickup.
Only problem is in 3rd after a couple minutes of highway driving it starts to loose power and spit and sputter. 2nd gear it's okay and i'll take revs; but in 3rd no way. I have a carb kit waiting to be picked up......maybe it's that ??
I don't have the specs for a 59 but (you've probably heard this before) you should spend the bucks to get a shop manual if you are serious about working on your truck. Lot's of great info in there including tune-up specs. Our hosts, MotorHaven, have shop manuals both in printed form and on CD. Just click the PARTS STORE button in the upper-right corner of your screen. What you buy there helps support this FTE site.
I know I didn't help with the immediate problem but you'll save yourself a lot of future aggravation and guesswork if you pick one up. Hope somebody else can get you the specs before you manual arrives.

I'll second what George said.
A shop manual is definately a great investment. The online store here also carries the '59 owner's manuals. there's some great info in there as well.
Here are the specs for the 1959 223 6 cylinder.......
Point gap (inches) = 0.024 - 0.026
Spark plug gap (inches) = 0.028 - 0.032
Initial Timing = 4 degrees BTDC
The problem you are experiencing could be the fuel system.
It could be:
Clogged jets
low float setting
power valve clogged or damaged
Restricted air cleaner
fuel pump pressure
Distributor vacuum passages in the carb are blocked
It could also be your ignition system. The shop manual says "the cause usually lies in the ignition system only when the trouble exists at all engine temperatures".
Things to check:
timing
coil
condenser
rotor
distributor advance
plugs
points
Excessive play in distributor shaft
Distributor cam
I hope this helps.
