HEy Guys or gals, I need a little help. I recently replaced my intake gasket, the old one was leaking. Anyways, I had to remove my distributor to get the intake out but I was son into trying to speed through it that I forgot how my distributor was set to the engine. I put in back in but my tyiming is all messed up. If anyone could tell me where to set me engine, my distributor rotor, and cap. I would be much abliged. I gues I will just keep screwing with it till then.

Any engine; any year;
Pull #1 spark plug out and bump engine over until you get compression out the plug hole, bring(turn) harmonic balancer markings up to TDC(top dead center),markings on balancer should align with markings on front timing cover, and install distibutor to where rotor button is pointing at the #1 spark plug wire, then use timing light to set final spark lead.

Very goood but if you dont know which way the distribator goes you cuold be 180 degrees outor as much as 360 degrees out.

I may not be up on all this new math and all but if I remember correctly 360 degrees is one full turn-which means you would be right on.
As for 180 degrees out =that is why you pull #1 and turn engine to compression stroke and stop with #1 at TDC. You could of course do this on any cylinder you wished as long as you knew where TDC is for that piston. Using #1 takes the guessing out of it, harmonic is marked at TDC for the pupose of timing engine CORRECTLY the first time.
