Average mpg reading

Does oversized tires make the average mpg meter read different or is it read through the ECM. My average mpg according to the truck with 35" tires is 11.3 in town

Absolutely. The truck gets it's speed/odometer readings from the sensor in the rear diff that reads from the tone ring there. So it is looking at the number of times the actual axles rotate at, it then multiplies that revolution count by the circumference of the stock sized tire to get both speed and odometer readings. So when the tires are larger than stock the readings get thrown off by however much different the new tire's circumference is. On my Ex I now run 35"s so my speed and odo are off by 10-12% on the low side, on a recent trip my GPS showed we traveled 1300 miles or so and the odo only went up by 1150 miles or so (sorry, I don't have my notebook handy right now). There is an adjustment to the tire revs per mile that can be made by a dealer or certain tuners or AE software to bring the speed and odo reading back to accurate values.
And of course the MPG meter uses the speedometer/odometer to do the calculations to compute the MPGs.

+1, if you ever get around to buying a tuner you will be able to reprogram yourself by revs per mile or by entering the tire size (my InTune let me tweak the revs per mile and my speedometer is spot on now with 33"s.)

Cool deal I'll have to calculate the mpg for now. I'm freaked out about getting a programmer or tune. I'm new to the ford diesel thing and the 6.0 horror stories. I bought my X it has a new turbo high pres oil cooler egr delete and supposed to have studded heads but not sure I want to take the chance.
