I changed the belt on my 4.9 this morning and you talk about a SOB of a job. I got the new one fitted in the pulleys right and the belt tensioner would not quite give enough to get the new belt on. The belt number was the same as the one I took off. I ended up loosening the tensioner and pulling it out until the dowel pin was clear and put the belt on the tensioner pulley and then turned the tensioner with a chain wrench to get the dowel started back in, then tightened the bole and got it back in place with the belt on. Does anyone know of an easier way to do it? I sure would have to replace one of these out on the interstate.
The tensioner should have a square hole in the end. Stick a 3/8" rachet in that hole and turn it. That is how I have always done it. Quick and easy. 5 minutes max.
I tried it by putting it on the alternator pulley last but it was just a hair too short to get it on. I even tried lubing it with dishwashing detergent and it was a no go! Anyway, it is on and working fine after loosening up that automatic tensioner and moving it so the sowel pin would clear. Thanks for the response.
I hate this job, s. belt, too. On my 90 F150 4.9L I have to use a crow bar to lift the tensioner and then ease the belt on, then repeat until it seats properly. Y'all with the tensioner that'll take a rachet are lucky. If you see us doin' this on the interstate, stop and lend a hand will ya! I hate crushing my own fingers when someone else's will do.
