I have a 351/c6 from a 83 f150 that I'm planning on using in a 56 pickup, also planning on aftermarket MII crossmember. My question is there a need to modify the transmission cover. I'm in the process of replacing the floor so would do the modification now if need be. Thanking you.
I have a 351W/C6 powertrain and I had to modify the transmission floor cover to make room for the floor shifter linkage. No mods to the floor of the cab, only the cover plate. With a Lokar shifter, I had to cut out part of the center section and raise it up to clear the shift linkage and shift lever.
Only the cover plate needed to be modified. The cab floor and firewall had adequate clearance to the C6. There is a picture in my gallery of the C6 and Lokar shifter sticking up through the missing cover plate opening.
I live just down the street from Direct Sheetmetal and I have a good working relationship with them. They fabricate a very nice transmission cover for the 53-56 F100s that has a raised tunnel. I have one on my truck, I can get a pic if you are interested.
I can't say for sure on your 56, but in my 52, I didn't have to change much. I used a 351w and C6 from an 89 F150. I also went with a Lokar shifter. I did have to slightly move the hole in the trans cover for the new shifter. I do have an new trans cover that I bought from Northern Classics. It was original in form, but didn't have any of the holes cut.
The reason I'm asking is because I'm completely replace all of the floor in a pickup cab and the 2 front sections don't fit very well, if I but the 2 halves they fit the rocker panels side to side but the transmission opening is 1 inch too wide so if I modify my trans cover need to know if I need extra height as well. This thread would go hand in hand with the fit of patch panels in the other thread regarding LMC patch panels. These are all manufactured by OVAL made in Tiawan that all the vendors are selling, the parts will work but you have to play with them to fit. Thanks all so far for your replies.
