Trans Problem
Actually Neither! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, I have seen this problem many times. The exhaust brake of any manufacturer causes the low/reverse clutch pack(which the smallest set of clutches in the trans) to work beyond their capability and literally burn up and in some cases I have seen them discintergrate(sp?). The Ford system is not designed for using an exhaust brake even though the after market insists that it will work and not void the Ford warranty. I would not be supprised if the local Ford dealership has not advised you of this as there is a Ford Oasis message that states that Ford will void your warranty if such aftermarket performance enhancers are added to the drivetrain and there is a failure.
Sorry your are having trouble, but I hope this information helps,
Thanks jim for your reply, it did help. You say the Ford system is not designed for the exhaust brake. Does that also mean 2nd and 3rd, because I have used it in 2nd & 3rd and have not had any trouble so far. Also are low/reverse the same clutch pack or are thay separate. A Ford Trans Technician in Eureka told me they were separate, but other machanics have told me they were the same.
Thanks again for your help.

It is the Coast clutches that are usually toast because of the exhaust brakes. They are applied when in manual first gear.
In manual Second, the Coast clutches are applied but the intermediate band is also applied and will allow that gear to operate to some extent.
What is the smart lock supposed to do? I am unfamiliar with this version.

99 Ford Diesel 7.3 with Banks exhaust brake and smart lock. Went down an 8 degree hill with 15,000 lb. load (truck & trailer) in first gear, auto transmission and first gear went out. Was it problems with Ford Transmission or driver error?
I'm not sure that the Allison autos used in heavy trucks would stand up to comparable abuse.
