Question Service Question

I have a 1997 Explorer, 2WD with the 5.0L engine. I bought it used in 1999 (it had around 15,000 miles on it at the time). It now has 82,000 miles. I have never had anything done except routine service at a local station. I'm now having some interior body work done (replacing cracked molding and instrument panel, door lock motor replaced, etc.), which my wife has been wanting done.

I would like to get any maintenance "caught up" while I'm doing this work. Can anyone tell me what engine items, belts, filters etc need to be replace. I'm not much of a mechanic (honestly I'm no mechanic at all). Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Since I can't do the work myself, should I take it to a Ford dealer or to a reputable garage (there are several garage's here in Pueblo with good reputations).

Thanks in advance!

Cy

Service Question

Welcome to FTE cychristian!

If you are not going to be doing the work yourself, a few things I would have done are:
  • Tranny Serviced
  • Serpentine Belt replaced
  • Intake and Injection Cleaned
  • PCV Valve replaced
  • Rear dope checked in rear end

With 82K miles, and just oil changes, etc done, these are a few things that need to be done to help avoid problems down the road. As for where to take it, I would recommend the dealer, unless you have a local garage that you know and trust. There are some very good and honest mechanics out there, but there are just as many cheats. Some of this type of work, people can say they have done - but don't. The Ford dealer may cost a dollar more sometimes, but at least your X is being worked on by someone who works specifically on Ford products. JMO of course...

If you need help with anything, let us know!

Service Question

You could go ahead and change them, but they are 'supposed' to be good for 100K. I change mine about every 60-75K miles just to be on the safe side, but I am also running a hotter ignition than stock, so I am pushing the platinum plugs more.

If you are going to have some of the other work done I mentioned, you might as well have them change the plugs also. They are not hard to change if you got through the fenderwell, but if you try and do them from the top of the engine, it can get a little hard...

One other thing I left out - change the fuel filter. THat in itself can make a world of difference....

I'd take a good look at the radiator hoses and heater hoses, too.
