Hey everyone. I'm going to get a Edelbrock intake for my 351m. I noticed in Summit they have a EGR for $240 and a non-EGR for $176. I dont have any of the smog stuff on my engine, so i dont really need the egr...my question is---are both intake exactly the same except for the egr stuff? I once heard a rumor that the non-egr model wasnt good, and that you should get the egr model even if your not gonna connect any smog stuff up. Is this tru? Give me some advise please!!!
Thanks
Gabriel
There is alot of debate here regarding the egr. I have the egr edelbrock manifold, but the egr is blocked off. It didnt make any difference on my emissions test. Its my opinion that the egr is good for nothing except vacuum leaks, and clogging your intake ports with carbon. Some folks here will say it makes the stock low compression motor run better, they may be right, I dont know because Im running flat top pistons. One advantage of the egr manifold is that it has the spacer between the carb and manifold which gives you more power. Im sure some others will give their opinions on this, read them and decide for yourself.
The non EGR manifold is not the same as the EGR manifold. The non EGR has a much narrower carb mounting flange which makes it prone to vacuum leaks according to a number of sources. The EGR manifold has a much larger mounting surface and does come with a 2V spacer for mounting the EGR valve. A 4V spacer can be purchased seperately.
I just bought a 1977 Ford Ranchero with a 400ci V8 with an EGR system. I plan to put an edelbrock intake manifold on it, and I saw that they made the non-EGR, and the EGR one. Now that I know the non-EGR model #2171 is more likely to leak, I think I will buy the 400 EGR model. You don't have to use the EGR system with the manifold if you buy the right adaptiors for edelbrock, right?
